Shunyuan Zhang, Param Vir Singh and Anindya Ghose’s paper “A Structural Analysis of the Role of Superstars in Crowdsourcing Contests” was accepted for publication at Information Systems Research.

This work is built upon Shunyuan Zhang’s first year paper. Information Systems Research is one the highly selective top journals for the Information Systems community.

Past research has shown that when individuals compete with superstars in tournaments their performance goes down as their chance of winning is too low and that in crowdsourcing contests as a result participants tend to avoid projects where they may have to compete with superstars. In contrast, this paper finds that though competing with superstars in a crowdsourcing contest reduces the chances of winning the contest, the participants also get n opportunity to learn by observing the best in action. As a result, participant’s chance of winning subsequent contests increases significantly after participating in a contest involving a superstar.
